The best in the world is the second book of the young French artist Pauline Martin, who had already made an impression with her first collection, La boîte (The box), in which she tells the story of her boyfriend’s suicide. In The best in the world Pauline Martin chooses gentler subject matter, using a subtle touch as she sizes up the romantic relationships between young people.
When The Best In The World was first published, one French critic remarked :
“ With her comic the best in the world, Pauline Martin succeeds in making the novel that many French writers fail to get right every year … ”
More praise from the French press :
“ Pauline Martin’s universe is curious, endearing and disturbing all at the same time. You begin to appreciate the feeling of unease that lingers throughout this work. ”
Pauline Martin has made two other books : Léonora, with David B., and Ce que je sais de ma maman (What I know about my mum).
She now works as an art director for a publisher of children’s books.
